about myself

Background: I have been playing piano since the age of five and slowly but surely increasing my level of ability. It wasn't until high school (and with growing maturity) that I realised that creating music was something special, and something that I could not live without.

No one was aware of it at the time but nowadays I'm not ashamed to admit that every spare chance that I had during high school I was in the school library doing my own research on great composers and the history of music just for my own enjoyment. Not for an assignment, not for a teacher, just for myself... and I loved it. It was a powerful experience as a growing teenager.

During this time I had a classical piano teacher as well as a modern / jazz piano teacher and completed my eight grade pianoforte with AMEB. I also had separete theory and aural lessons until I was accepted into the Conservatorium Of Music when I was 17 and majored in composition.

The advantage of majoring in composition at the Conservatorium was that I thrived on being consumed by all types of music in such a fantastic learning environment. Not only in terms of performance, but composing music for ensembles and witnessing the miracles that happen when people create music together. It is with this passion that I pursued my own dream of creating my own music studio. Now that I have over 20 students, it feels as I have '20 odd' friends 'hiding out the library' all loving music together. I hope that my students find that having a passion for music is an indescribable experience and can be your constant companion your whole life.

After I completed my Bachelor of Music in Composition, I studied a Bachelor of Secondary Education. I continued to teach private piano through out my time at university. My students ranged from kindegarten to over 50.

During this time I also had the oppurtunity to teach music and movement at a child care centre, and music group in a special behaviour intervention school in Brisbane where I received specialist training in Behaviour Management and Intervention. (Glassar and Crisis Prevention and Intervention)

I have also accompanied various choirs and vocalists for their singing examinations.

For the last four years I have been teaching music and music extension, as well as conducting a choir for a local high school. The most rewarding experience was when we achieved a Gold in the Choral Fanfare Competition for the Moreton District in 2007.

Most recently, I have been back to the Conservatorium and completed a summer school in Studio Music Teaching and networked with other piano studios across Brisbane.

Other Info: Teaching style: Parents and older students often ask me what my 'method of teaching' is. I do not follow any method (so to speak). The first couple of lessons I really try to get to know the student and what would suit them the best.

I offer a program for young beginners that involves singing / movement / playing on a variety of percussion instruments. This is not for everybody and would be discussed with the student and parent.

For more advanced pianists, I believe that due to my training in composition and where my passion for music stems, my teaching style mainly focuses on expression, the beauty of interpretation and how the player wants the 'story to be told'. I am not a technical teacher, but certainly ensure that the student has the technical capability to handle their pieces but with the goal of being able to 'tell the story most effectively' in mind.
